BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: Part Two - Pastor Joel Ramsey

The Essential Distinction: Salvation vs Spirit Baptism
When we first come to faith in Christ, the Holy Spirit performs a crucial work: baptizing us into Jesus for salvation (1 Corinthians 12:13). This initial experience brings new life, regenerates our spirit, and establishes our relationship with God. However, the baptism with the Holy Spirit is a separate experience that follows salvation – the divine empowerment for Christian living and ministry.
Consider the early believers in Samaria (Acts 8:14-17). Though they had accepted Christ and
received water baptism, they still needed to receive the Holy Spirit through the apostles'
ministry. This biblical account clearly demonstrates that while all genuine believers have the
Holy Spirit living within them, there remains another dimension of the Spirit's work available to
every Christian.

Understanding the Purpose and Power
This baptism isn't merely a historical event or one-time experience – it represents an ongoing
empowerment for Christian living and ministry. Jesus promised in Acts 1:8, "You will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.” You receive
power for a purpose, and the purpose is to be a witness to the world about the resurrected
Jesus!

We receive Power for Ministry
The baptism with the Holy Spirit releases an extraordinary ability to minister effectively. In Acts
5:12-16, we see how this power worked through the apostles, resulting in healing miracles,
deliverance from evil spirits, and massive spiritual breakthrough in entire communities. Even
Peter's shadow passing over the sick brought healing – not because of Peter's personal power,
but because of the Holy Spirit working through him.

Enhanced Spiritual Life
Romans 8:26 reveals how the Spirit enhances our prayer life, helping us pray effectively even
when we don't know what to pray. This deeper communion with God often manifests through
praying in tongues, which the Apostle Paul himself practiced extensively (1 Corinthians 14:18).
Additionally, John 14:26 shows how the Spirit provides supernatural insight into Scripture,
bringing God's Word alive in fresh ways.

Spiritual Gifts for Service
The baptism with the Holy Spirit activates various spiritual gifts for serving the church and
reaching the world.
These include, but are not limited to:
• Words of wisdom and knowledge for specific situations
• Faith for supernatural breakthrough
• Gifts of healing and working of miracles
• Prophecy and discernment
• Speaking in tongues and interpretation
• Leadership and administration gifts

5. We receive Power for Christian living
While gifts are given instantly, the fruit of the Spirit grows over time. Galatians 5:22-23 outlines
these character qualities: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. The Spirit's presence helps develop Christ-like character
alongside supernatural gifting.

6. How to Receive the Baptism with the Holy Spirit
Jesus desires to immerse believers in His Spirit, and receiving this gift involves simple yet
profound steps. Luke 11:11-13 provides wonderful assurance: just as earthly parents give
good gifts to their children, our Heavenly Father eagerly gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask.
Scripture shows three primary ways people receive this baptism:

Through Waiting and Praying (Acts 1:14, 2:1-4)
The original disciples received the Spirit while waiting and praying in the upper room. This
pattern of seeking God through prayer often prepares our hearts for a deeper work of the
Spirit.

Through Hearing the Preached Word (Acts 10:44)

In Cornelius's house, the Holy Spirit fell on everyone who heard Peter's message, showing how
God's Word can create an atmosphere for receiving the Spirit.

Through the Laying on of Hands (Acts 19:1-6)

This remains one of the most common methods, where Spirit-filled believers pray for others to
receive this baptism. Paul used this approach with the Ephesian disciples, resulting in
immediate manifestations of the Spirit's presence.

Embracing This Gift Today
The baptism with the Holy Spirit isn't an optional extra – it's a vital gift that Jesus continues to
give His church in the 21st century. It's not about personal worthiness but about God's
faithfulness to His promise to pour out His Spirit on all flesh (Joel 2:28-29).
Remember these key principles when seeking this baptism:
- It's a gift to be received, not a reward to be earned
- You don't need to fear receiving the wrong spirit (Luke 11:11-13)
- Being willing to yield completely to the Spirit's work is essential
- Regular "refilling" keeps this experience fresh and powerful
The same power that transformed the early church remains available today. Whether through
private prayer, corporate worship, or the ministry of Spirit-filled believers, God wants to baptize
you with His Spirit.

This supernatural empowerment is for every believer who desires to live effectively for Christ.
As you open your heart to receive, trust that your Heavenly Father eagerly desires to give you
this good gift.
